Sentencing on Rutger's case-let's chat.

So everyone is talking about the Rutger's case... the sentencing was done yesterday.  Dharun was sentenced to 30 days in jail for spying on his roommate via a webcam.  If you don't know the story, he spied on his roommate who was a gay man (who wasn't out) kissing another guy.  That gay roommate committed suicide three days later.

So, some people are very upset about him only getting 30 days.  They want him to have 10 years in jail.  My opinion = I think 30 days is enough.  How can we expect a person to go to jail for 10 years because he probably was just being a stupid immature college student by spying on his roommates.  Can we really sit here and say that this guy intentionally did this so his roommate can commit suicide?  I am pretty sure Dharun didn't think all this would happen.  But 10 years????  He didn't push the guy off the bridge.  Did we ever stop and consider that his roommate had some other issues that contributed to his decision to take his own life?  I think 10 years is excessive.  Some people who commit worse crimes don't even do that type of time.... and they actually physically commit a crime.

Another reason why I feel the way I do is that Dharun life is over.  It was over the minute this case hit the media and took a turn for the worse.  Isn't it punishment enough to have to be him and TRY to continue with a life in the future.  Especially after the media has plastered his face and story  all over the world.  He gets death threats.  He has to walk around for the REST OF HIS LIFE watching his back, because some crazed person out there is going to wreak havoc on him.  I am sorry, but that is punishment enough.  His life has already been taken away by us, his peers.  He will never lead a normal life.

So, in the end, both kids have lost their life, one physically and one emotionally.

I  hope no one "stops following me" because of this, but this is my blog and my sole opinion.  I would love to hear your opinions if you would like to share.

I pray to God that both kids will find peace in their decisions and no harm be done to Dharum out of revenge.  And I hope the roommates family and friends may one day come to peace on the gay roommates decision to take his own life.

The world we live in is a harsh harsh world, but we must remember to make the best of it while we are here.
